1. Start with the household shelter, not the sofa
Your household shelter is a fixed feature and its door and ventilation openings must remain accessible. Mark it on the floor plan before deciding on an entryway cabinet. Consider a shallow shoe cabinet with a seat only where it does not narrow the main walking route.
2. A peninsula is not always better than a galley kitchen
A peninsula creates a useful extra counter and can separate cooking from dining, but it can also pinch the walkway. Sketch the fridge, sink, hob, washer and open appliance doors first. A simple galley kitchen with uninterrupted counter space may work better for homeowners who cook every day.
3. Think about dining before building a feature wall
Try a rectangular dining table near the kitchen, then test a round table or wall-side bench if circulation feels tight. Leave enough room to pull out chairs without blocking the kitchen entrance. An elaborate TV wall will not compensate for an awkward dining arrangement.
4. One wall of storage can beat five small cabinets
Plan a single practical storage zone for shoes, cleaning items, documents and electronics. Vary cabinet depth to match contents and keep access to electrical panels and other required services. Fewer visual breaks can make a room look calmer.
5. Keep the spare bedroom adaptable
A home office with modular furniture can become a nursery or guest room. Built-in platforms and fixed partitions are harder to change. If you are considering hacking a wall, check structural limitations and HDB approval requirements before designing around the idea.
6. Layer lighting instead of relying on downlights
Combine ambient light with task lighting at kitchen counters and a focused light near the dining or study area. Think about switches and power outlets before carpentry. A dramatic false ceiling is not essential to a well-lit home.
7. Plan for actual belongings, not just showroom photos
Count shoes, luggage, kitchen appliances and seasonal items before specifying storage. Measure the sofa, dining table and bed to scale on your own HDB plan. A design that looks spacious in a render can feel cramped once real furniture arrives.
